Lost and found, reviewing Tile Mate.

Tile Mate is a Bluetooth tracking product which can help you find a missing item. Attach Tile Mate to a key ring, slip it into a bag or put it in the car glovebox, the ideas are almost endless. And if your precious items ever go missing you have a higher chance of finding it back. Simply jump into the Tile app, to ring up to 45 meters (150 feet) or pinpoint its location if it is within range.

The new Tile Mate 2018 / 2019 edition offers improvements from the previous generation. With a replaceable CR1632 battery which doesn’t make this Tile Mate obsolete when the power dies like the previous Tiles. The old Tile generation is sealed in with the battery. Meaning if you want to change it there is no easy way of opening it. Hence making it a waste of money and also an environmental waster after a year.

The Tile Mate is a simple design. A tiny plastic measuring 3.5cm by 3.5cm and a thickness of 0.5cm. It comes in white with a slick silver circle button the center encompassing the Tile logo. This button is used for ringing your mobile phone if t becomes missing. In this ringing mode, Bluetooth must be turned on or this find feature deems useless. The back is light grey with 3 tiny speaker holes and a removable lid for the battery which has 3 raised groves for grip purpose. Surprisingly it also has a very small printed QR code. Not sure where this QR code directs to or what it is used for. I doubt anyone in could be bothered scanning this QR code.

It’s very light weighted, about 5.7 grams (0.2 ounces). The plastic is reasonably strong enough to take the daily pounding but do not bash it with a hammer as it would crack under such force. Expect light scuffle marks but does it really matter?

The alarm sound is about 119 db, which can be quite loud making it easier to locate your items. It is louder than the previous generation by comparison.

I have been using my Tile Mate for the past 6 months. It’s attached to my wallet and keys. If you ask me do I find it useful? My answer to that is, not at this moment. The reason is that I have not had a mishap but I will never know when that day might come so it is handy to have such a product.

Positive Points:

Missing placed items can now be found.

Has replaced battery.

Alarm ring tone is loud.

Easy to use mobile app.

Strong enough for daily use.

Should be able to last a few years.

Negative Points:

Plane boring design.

Plastic can get dirty and scuffed up easily

While it is small, it is still a bit bulky to go on a key change or wallet.
