Using Metaballs to create interesting shapes and forms

by Design SyncDecember 29, 2020

Metaballs has been in Blender for a while and can be good use to create cell like models, strange organic shapes or forms. It’s an interesting way to model because of the fluidly like shape connection it has when it is pulled apart between two or more Metaball objects. It’s simple and easy to use and makes it a great base model to refine mode with sculpting. I recently used it to create some dense liquid drips. No need to do any simulation, I was just simply repeating the steps as I have outline below.

How to use Metaballs in Blender 2.9?

1. Press Shift A and go to Metaball and selected on of the options (Ball, Capsule, Plane, Ellipsoid or Cube).
2. Duplilcate the Metaball by pressing Ctrl D and G to move it. Repeat this set to form a desire model you like or add other Metaball objects by following step one.
3. When you have completed laying out the Metaballs, select all the Metaballs (Using the Outline is the easiest way) and then go to Object > Convert To > Mesh. This will union your Metaballs in one mesh or as one object.
4. You can use this object to sculpt or refine your model further.
